How does it feel to go in the studio for the fourth time with the same guys from The Poodles? Can they still surprise you?
We know each other pretty well by now and it´s all good times in the studio.
When do you hear the songs/demos for the first time and are there any pre-studio sessions/preparations?
I´ve cowritten a lot of the songs with Jakob so for them I have a clear idea of what the final product will sound like and the other songs I get to hear maybe a month before we start recording. The band usually rehearse the songs before we start recording and then I prepare rough backing tracks for recording drums which is what we start with.
Who's the driving force in the studio and has the final word?
I´d say myself and Jakob for the most part.
Describe a little bit the production process with the Poodles.
I start tracking drums with Kicken and when I´m done editing we´re usually move on to rhythm guitars, bass, vocals, guitarsolos, synths and so on. When everything is recorded and edited I start mixing.
Do you prefer to record live (the band playing together) or instrument by instrument and why?
Instrument by instrument for many reasons one being that the guys are pretty busy so getting them together for a longer period would be tricky, also some of the final guitar arrangements are done as me and Henrik go into the studio and they dictate the bass parts for example.
How many songs is usually recorded for the album ?
10-15 songs.
Is it tough to find the right sound and direction?
Some songs need more sounddesign than others and I can spend quite some time looking for the right sound/feel but I would´t say it´s tough, rather fun.
When is the time you say "we got it”?
Every now and then when we get a really good vocal take or guitar solo for example and when everyone is happy with the mix.
